Recent evidence suggests that metastatic bone cancer can be effectively treated with thermal therapy. For example, thermal therapy enables targeted drug delivery to bone, ablation of cancer cells in bone marrow, and palliation of bone pain. Thermal therapy of bone metastases would be greatly improved if it were possible to image the temperature of the tissue surrounding the disease, which is usually red bone marrow (RBM). Unfortunately, current thermal imaging techniques are inaccurate in RBM. Here, we show that many of the difficulties with thermal imaging of RBM can be overcome using a magnetic resonance phenomenon called an intermolecular multiple quantum coherence (iMQC). Herein, iMQCs are detected with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pulse sequence called multi-spin-echo HOMOGENIZED with off resonance transfer (MSE-HOT). Compared to traditional methods, MSE-HOT provided ten-fold more accurate images of temperature change. Furthermore, MSE-HOT was translated to a human MRI scanner, which enabled imaging of RBM temperature during heating with a clinical focused ultrasound applicator. In summary, this dissertation develops a MRI technique that enables thermal imaging of RBM during thermal therapy of bone metastases.

Utility of F-18 FDG PET/CT for Detection of Bone Marrow Metastases in Prostate Cancer Patients Treated with Radium-223

A 76-year-old man with symptomatic bone metastases from castrationresistant prostate cancer underwent Radium-223-dichloride (Ra-223) therapy. Before Ra-223 therapy, he had normal peripheral blood cell counts. Ra-223 therapy relieved his shoulder and low back pain. The elevation of the serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA), doubling every month during Ra-223 therapy, suggested a PSA flare or rel...

False Negativity of Tc-99m Labeled Sodium Phytate Bone Marrow Imaging Under the Effect of G-CSF Prescription in Aplastic Anemia: A Case Report

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a hematopoietic cytokine which controls the differentiation and growth of hematopoietic cells in the bone marrow. We report a severe aplastic anemia (SAA) patient with false-negative 99mTc sodium phytate bone marrow imaging findings under concurrent G-CSF therapy. The first bone marrow imaging showed a normal bone marrow activity. However, the bo...

The Role of Bone Marrow Aspiration and Bone Marrow Biopsy in Diagnosis of Bone Marrow Metastases

Background: Bone marrow is the site of many malignant disorders and it is one of the common places for solid tumors to metastasize. Examination of the bone marrow aspirate and biopsy is a routine procedure performed for assessment of various conditions such as cytopenias, hematologic neoplasms, nonmalignant disorders and metastatic neoplasms. Methods: The patients were referred to the Hema...
